Calm Down Corner Visual- you can edit! (edit in powerpoint)
1-Feel: Students recognize they are experiencing a "big" feeling and need to use the calm down corner (I call it the second chance spot)...or the teacher sends the student to use this area of the classroom
2-Breathe: Student uses coping skill
-mountain breathing: hold left hand/5 fingers up and trace with right index finger. While going up breathe in and when going down the finger breathe out. I tell them they have 5 mountains and the sled dog is their index finger climbing.
-birthday candles: students hold up all 10 fingers and blow out each finger one by one and bend the finger as soon as they blow it. (cannot blow all 10 out at once like a typical cake). To get them to do it, I let them practice super speed and super slow sloth speed where we race and then medium/regular speed.
-hot chocolate breathing: they pretend their hands are holding a mug, we talk about what we'd have on our mug (pic of puppy, t-rex, etc.). They smell the hot chocolate (breathe in through their nose) and then cool it off (blow out of small circle from mouth)
-squeeze the lemons: tense hands and then release we say "squeeze, squeeze, squeeze, let go"
-pretzel: arms out, thumbs down, cross right hand over left, intertwine fingers, push hands down then pull up by your belly button until they reach your chin. Cross your legs and breathe out.
3-Solve: Use a strategy from the wheel to solve problem
Helpful hints: Include calm-down kit with stress balls, play doh, glitter jar, etc. to help kids calm down in this area.
