Calming Strategies
There are so many kids today that have difficulty controlling their emotions due to many factors and sometimes in manifests itself in negative behavior. It’s our job to help get them back to calm as quickly as possible.
This product contains four charts; two in color and two in black and white. One set contains a female and the other a male. I would print on card stock and laminate and have the children who have difficulty keep it in a handy place. There are twenty different strategies that children can try and hopefully one will do the trick!
Strategies are as follows:
-deep breaths
-count forward or backward
-deliver a message (helps to redirect anger and feel empowered)
-get some water
-exercise
-think happy thoughts
-jumping jacks
-listen to music
-whisper “Stay cool.”
-relax in a comfy place
-sit on a body ball
-squeeze a stress ball
-play with blocks
-go for a walk-movement break
-push, pull, dangle-Kids push down with their arms, pull up and then let them dangle their arms-shake it out!
-yoga pose
-draw
-write in a “Feelings Journal” where they can write about what’s happening or draw about it
-chew gum-I would always have some handy. It is amazing what that does to calm one down.
-Mantra: “I’m good! I’m calm.”
I would teach these to the whole class and possibly if you are one of the lucky ones to have a poster maker, make a poster and display it. However, if you want to keep it only for those who need it, you can have them use an erasable marker and check off the strategies they try.
Hopefully, you will find this really helps to diffuse the situation. Great for parents too!!
