This is my go to calming tool for the cozy corner and quiet area. We have these laminated and on a ring in the cozy corner and taped high on the wall (above kid reach in larger print of course) in our quiet room. We practice these strategies along with other physical calming down strategies (listed in another lesson) from day one. Typically after group I have a student lead one of the strategies, putting his own twist on it. The kids earn bonus points for doing this (have to make it fun and worthwhile). So by the time we have our meltdowns, the kid are already really familiar with these and can actually attempt to use them in the moment. If I have a kid who is really dysregulated, I always incentivize them for using a strategy when upset - with high levels of reinforcement at the very beginning.
