Count the calories, make a fitness plan, watch weight, and practice linear inequalities in this 21st century math project. Students will use real world authentic calorie data from common foods, popular fast food restaurants and also will use calorie burning measurements in a variety of activities. Students will look at meals and exercise in a completely different way as they help a cast of characters make dietary choices, plan meals and choose physical activities to remain fit.
Although students will learn elements of calories and fitness, the lessons focus on creating and using inequalities to model situations and make decisions. With a greater national focus on the diets of our children, this activity provides an objective, scientific view that students may never have been exposed to before.
Bring health and fitness into a math classroom!
In this 26 page PDF you will receive a mapping to the Content Standards, an outline for how to implement the project, handout resources for students to use, and an answer key. In all it is four different assignments --

-- In "Fitness Guru", students will use operations and determine inequality signs. Are they reaching to their exercise calorie goals? Students will use the handout “The Burn Chart” to complete the activity.
-- In "Weight Watchers", students will help five people make meals and write inequalities to determine if they will eat enough food to meet their goals. Students will use the “The Burn Chart” and “The Food Chart” handouts to complete the activity.
-- In "Personal Trainer", students will tailor diet plans and fitness regiments for five celebrities – all with very different demands. Students will use the “The Burn Chart”, “The Food Chart” and “Fast Food Nation” handouts to complete the activity.
