This is an entire English reading lesson, with detailed teaching notes, that focuses on market life in Southeast Asia. Your students will work towards building better reading skills and practicing thinking critically around the topic of The Russian Market in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The lesson starts by getting learners to think about the differences between a wet and dry market and then moves onto a reading task and with various comprehension activities that get students thinking about different details of how the text was written. Target audiences are discussed in the questions and the figurative language of metaphor is also explored. Students have multiple opportunities to identify and explore metaphors in context. They finish the lesson with collaborating on and rewriting the text for a new target audience, using their own metaphors unique to that group.
