Product Description

This national park camping product is an extension to our national parks research project; however, it can also be used on its own. Have your students learn about camping in the national parks through activities that integrate reading, writing, social studies, science, and math. There are four activities included in the unit, which are listed in more detail below:

National Parks Camping

Activity 1: Tent Structure

- Students learn about the structure of four types of tents, and then they participate in a group STEM activity where they build their own stable tent out of straws. The tent should stay standing when placed in front of a fan

Activity 2: Camping Trip Planning

- Students learn how to read a topographical map and then use a topographical map to help them plan a camping/hiking trip in a national park.

Activity 3: Packing List

- Students learn about different types of camping gear and then choose the appropriate gear for their camping trip to include in a list.

Activity 4: Compass and GPS

- Students learn how a compass and GPS work. Then they build their own compass using a magnet and needle and use it to work with a partner on a navigating activity.
