**Written by Story Monster Approved and Mom's Choice Award winning author**

This book started as a song that I wrote for my sixth grade Science students during my second year of teaching. I needed to find a way to make dirt interesting. I wrote this song while I was riding around one sunny afternoon in the truck with my husband. As we passed by wooded hillsides, I saw soil profiles in plain sight with crispy leaves lying gently on top. The song was finished by the end of the ride, and I could not wait to share it with my students. As years progressed, so did my enthusiasm for the song. I added more to the lessons, including a scrumptious dessert. Every year a couple of former students would visit with me in Room C109 and request a copy of “The Soil Horizon Song.” I would like to thank those few that did. Their enthusiasm made me realize that maybe others would like to share in the fun, too. Thanks for taking the time to read my story. Enjoy!

Told through a narration, readers will learn how to identify and classify the horizons, or soil layers, in the temperate soil profile. In addition, readers will find opportunities to learn through multiple modalities. This book includes extension activities such as “The Soil Horizon Song” and an edible soil profile recipe.

Author's Note: The pictures included in this book are meant to capture the essence of the soil profiles in the temperate climate. They were taken in Northeastern PA. Take time to investigate the climate and soil profile in your neighborhood. By observing, we can learn. By learning, we can grow. By growing, we can help each other. By helping each other, we can change the world. :)
