This activity corresponds to CCSS 7.G.2. Students will create triangles out of straws and measure the sides to discover the Triangle Inequality Theorem.

- Discussion Questions
*Suggestion: The directions have students cutting their own straws then passing them to a neighbor. This works well with calm classes that follow directions well. Otherwise, you end up with straws in students' mouths, straw pieces (intentionally or unintentionally) flying across the classroom, or straws being cut into way more than 3 pieces. If those possibilities don't appeal to you, another option is to pre-cut the straws in set lengths. I usually color code them so I know the bags of blue straws make 3, 4, 5 triangles, for example. This allows me to have an answer key and easily double check students' measurements.
