Subitizing is the instant ability to recognize objects without counting them. Subitizing is something that is done everyday in each of our lives. One example of subitizing is when you roll a dice. If you roll a six, do you count every dot or do you identify two rows of three?
At the beginning of the year we give our students a quick subitizing quiz to assess their ability to "see" numbers at a glance, without one-to-one counting. We use several different subitizing activities to help them with this foundational skill. One activity we use throughout the year is the "First to 100 Game."
