Author's Note:This product can be used very effectively by teachers in The United States and Canada and offers extensive opportunities for students to engage in investigating past societies, which is a centerpiece of 5th grade social studies curriculum in both The United States and Canada. In The United States, comparative country case studies are also an important piece of the curriculum, but if that aspect of the unit is not something you may be interested in exploring, you can by all means leave it out. Nothing in our lesson plans or interactive notebook/lapbook activities is etched in stone. Simply pick and choose depending on your differentiated needs. You might also consider simply using the case study as a differentiated small group extension and/or individual enrichment option. In addition, most upper grade students in the United States are well versed in American history, so the focus of this unit is overwhelmingly geared towards learning about Canada. We try to include a wide array of ideas and options and the teacher can most certainly use his/her discretion regarding which parts are most useful, applicable, and worthwhile for their individual student groups. That being said, most essential social studies themes coincide and overlap in both countries. For example, political, cultural, and citizenship conflicts and resolutions both then and now, can be found throughout the bundle with primary and secondary sources (great for resource-based learning) as well as links to many useful websites. Some examples of these are the Quebec Act, the Constitution of 1867, Hudson's Bay Charter, the Nunavut Act, the Treaty of Ghent, the Metis Bill of Rights, the French and Indian War, the Quebec Referendum, and the Red River Rebellion, to name just a few. These are all created for teaching specifically about Canada and have been used by American and Canadian teachers alike. We also include an array of information and options relating to Canada's geographical features, important places, famous figures, inventions and innovations, and meaningful issues facing Canadians both past and present. More themes of Canadian curriculum that are explored in this unit are First Nations, Europeans in early Canada, New France, and origins of the country. There are activities relating to political and physical regions for both provinces and territories as well as Canadians interacting with the global community (touching upon interdependence). Also, Canadian environmental issues, economic decisions, and controversial issues are introduced for the students to discuss, debate, clarify and defend their positions and opinions. Multiple Canadian-based informational test prep passages were created to support and enhance literacy through social studies, as well as to consider continuity and change in Canada. Another important aspect of the curriculum in both America and Canada is the integration of technology which is present throughout our activities. Students absolutely love the diverse variety of options and activities, which allow them to pick and choose among their favorite individual areas of interest. They then are given the technological and artistic tools to create their own amazing interactive displays to present to the class. We are confident you and your students will find many informative, interesting, and useful applications with this bundle!

Oh Canada!

Canada Interactive Notebook and Lapbook Activities allows students to think on a higher level by virtue of collaborative and imaginative work. Students will create their lapbooks and/or use the templates for an interactive notebook for differentiated, self-directed learning!

Lapbooks are a type of portfolio or collection of student work on a variety of topics using flaps and/or folded displays. Most lapbooks are created out of office file folders which are then folded in half. Lapbooks allow students to showcase their work by providing them an interactive space for sketches and drawings, story summaries, graphical information, timelines, charts, and other forms of written work. Best of all, they can range from any topic or unit study. They truly let students creatively display their work in a way that interests them the most, which allows for a multitude of differentiation for each individual student.
