Product Description
David Suzuki, Environmentalist and Scientist is designed as a multi-purpose informational reading, writing and science assignment unit for upper elementary students. A great unit for Earth Day!

This unit focuses on two things - the life and work of David Suzuki and how we can all improve the environment that we all share. The activities can be used as part of a larger unit on environmentalism. Each of the 3 texts can be used alone or during one period of classroom time. Each text has a page of questions (inference, factual, and opinion) to measure student comprehension and allow them to practice their creative skills. Please have a look at the preview to get an idea of what the product includes.

Page 1: A list of six vocabulary words/phrases that relate to the environment. These terms can be used in class to begin a discussion about the environment. A helpful website is included in the Teacher Guide.

Pages 2-7: Three texts and comprehension pages about the life of David Suzuki from his childhood to his current status as the head of the David Suzuki Foundation. Reading about his early years in a Japanese internment camp during WWII could lead to a discussion about overcoming adversity and going on to achieve great things.

Pages 8: A list of the goals of the David Suzuki Foundation which make excellent discussion points. Students are asked to give an example of how as Canadians and residents of the world, we can all strive to meet these goals. The URL for the Foundation is included in the Teacher Guide.

Pages 9-10: A short text about where Canada stands in the world as far as helping the environment. Five environmental issues are supplied in boxes (to be cut out and rearrange on a supplied graphic organizer); students may work individually or in groups to decide which environmental issue is the most important to pursue - there is space on the organizer for them to explain why they have placed the issues in a particular order. The class can regroup and see if everyone agrees or not, and why. The URL for the article referred to in the text at the top of the page is included.

Pages 11-16: Answer key for all objective questions.

This product is also part of a bundle which includes "John McCrae, His Life and Times", and "Terry Fox, A Canadian Hero". It can be seen here: John McCrae Terry Fox David Suzuki Bundle
