PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Canada’s Native Peoples: 30 Graphic Organizers - Traditional Ways

This bundle includes two sets of 15 Graphic Organizers to help students study and organize what they learn about Canada's Inuit and First Nations peoples.

The first set of 15 includes: 3 organizers on each of the following 5 Aboriginal peoples of Canada – Inuit, Haida, Blackfoot, Iroquois (Haudenosaunee), and Mi’kmaq (Micmac).
Page 1 of each has questions on where the nations lived, their language, and their housing. There is also space for students to draw or glue an image of something related to housing and to draw a map of where each nation lived.
Page 2 includes sections on art and myths/legends (for the latter students are asked to read and interpret an online myth or legend).
Page 3’s topics are “Survival” (hunting, farming, food, clothing) and “European Contact”.

The organizers are designed so that students will be able to provide answers from their own text books, classroom resources, the library, and the Internet. The questions are designed to encourage the students to research and to apply what they have found to further inquiry – e.g. how European contact affected the lives of the traditional nations. Please have a look at the preview for a more detailed idea of what this product has.

I have organized the sections from north to west to east - but they are numbered in sections so that may be used in any order, or used over time - the organizers can be used as an activity in itself or as complementary activities for other resources that might be used while teaching about Canada’s Native peoples. Each of the topics could lead students to search for more information in specific assignments designed by the teacher. The organizers can be completed individually, in groups, or as independent work.

The second set of 15 organizers includes: 3 organizers on each of the following 5 Aboriginal peoples of the Subarctic region of Canada: the peoples of the Yukon, the Dene, the Cree, the Northern Ojibway and the Innu. It is similar in scope to the first set, and with this I have included an extensive list of websites (many of the activities direct students to specific websites, but in many cases other sources can be used).
Page 1 of each has questions on where the nations lived, their language, and their housing. There is also space for students to draw or glue an image of something related to housing and to draw a map of where each nation lived.
Page 2 includes sections on art and/or crafts and myths/legends (for the latter students are asked to read and interpret an online myth or legend).
Page 3’s topics are “Survival” and “European Contact”.

The organizers are designed so that students will be able to provide answers from their own text books, classroom resources, the library, and the Internet. Each one can be answered just using online sources. The questions are designed to encourage the students to research and to apply what they have found to further inquiry – e.g. how European contact affected the lives of the traditional nations.

Detailed answer keys are included.
