I created this activity for my students and they loved it! Play based learning is such an engaging way to get students actively participating in their learning.
This activity is primarily for grade 5 students and should be used as an anticipatory set (beginning of learning about the confederation).
The goal of this activity is to transfer the required items (in the materials list- can be found in your gym equipment room) from one side of the country* to the other. Colonies can buy and sell, trade and/or work together in any way to transfer their goods. Items can only be transferred across the country by railway**. The Colony that can transfer the required goods to the other side of the country the fastest, without losing goods (goods falling off the railway) wins!
**Railway=scooter pulled with a long string
Similar to the confederation, colonies experienced many benefits once they decided to worked together e.g. CNN. There are many other parallels from this activity to the Canadian Confederation such as colonies having different currencies and measuring systems making it harder to trade. Student’s will remember this activity and thus will remember important components of the Confederation.
