This resource begins with a student survey about our national anthem, great for initiating discussion and finding out what students know or what they think! The lines on the right of the page are for students to jot down possible answers (useful for group work). An answer key is included for the survey (I have not numbered the survey page).
The passage, two and a quarter pages in length, is followed by a page of comprehension and opinion questions. There is an answer key for the questions.
The passages cover the history of our national anthem included the changes that were officially introduced in 2018 for the lyrics of the English version. Following the text is a brief passage about MP Mauril Belanger who was instrumental in changing the lyrics after introducing the private member’s bill in 2016. He saw the bill pass but died before the new lyrics were officially introduced to Canadians.
Also included on page 3 are three versions of O Canada: the French version, the new English lyrics version, and the bilingual version.
This resource can be purchased in a small bundle with a very similar resource for grades 5-6 level. The latter resource can also be purchased separately. The small bundle is also part of my Canada Day bundle. Follow the links below to find out more:
