Product Description
This product touches on a variety of comprehension strategies for reading expository text while students learn about Canadian Thanksgiving at the same time. Students will use what they have learned about the expository structure to write their own informational texts.

The first text piece is about a family's traditions at Thanksgiving. The second is about the origins of Canadian Thanksgiving and comes in two different reading levels. Though this lesson uses Canadian spellings and features an article about the history of Canadian Thanksgiving, the reading and writing skills are general enough to be used in ANY country that wants to learn about Canadian Thanksgiving.

The first article works on skills involving Main Idea and Supporting Details, Too Broad or Too Narrow and Adding Details. The second article, The History of Canadian Thanksgiving, allows students to read an article in one of two different reading levels and then work through skills needed to analyze expository text including Important and Interesting, Main Idea and Supporting Details & Summarizing. There is minimal preparation needed for these activities and the only materials needed are a few copies of the article, copies of the organizers or writing paper and some highlighters or coloured pens.

There is a set of five writing prompts that feature expository, narrative and persuasive ideas as well as several mini writing activities relating to Thanksgiving included in this package. Writing papers are included for students to use to display their work.
