After losing my best friend to bone cancer in April 2017, I became inspired to write the short story, My Best Friend Has Cancer, to help students know and understand how serious the disease is. In fact, many of our children in America and worldwide have been stricken with this horrible disease.
In this realistic fiction short story, an eighth grader, Skylar, faces a major challenge, brain cancer. But her best friend, Brittany, does something really amazing, which helps the family cope with this unexpected circumstance in different forms.
This heartfelt story will teach students to be sensitive to the needs of others. And the fundraising project is included to provide an hands-on-approach experience pertaining to this type of situation.
Critical thinking questions are included in the lesson plan to help guide students mindset on this serious matter.
October is Cancer Awareness Month. And this story will add great value to the cause.
