This complete lesson plan follows the preferred 5-E format for science. Students are engaged by simulating the projected incidence of cancer among their classmates. Students then explore by using prior knowledge to complete a Venn diagram comparing normal and cancer cells. The teacher offers further explanation by guiding students through a graphic organizer of the multistep model of cancer development. Students extend upon this information by working in groups to investigate and explain how one of 6 environmental factors transforms normal cells into cancer cells, and by participating in an online discussion board. Finally, student knowledge is assessed by a class discussion of which forms of cancer are highly preventable through lifestyle change and by completing and analyzing a practice question from a former AP Biology exam. All necessary materials are included.
