FREE Fact Find Extension Activity List
I have marked this for grades 3-5, so third graders will find it more challenging to read and fifth graders will find it easier :-)
This is perfect for fall, especially for October as you near Halloween or November as you near Thanksgiving. This is the most popular time for candy corn, but these are simply facts, so they could be used any time of the year.
This is not just any 'ole puzzle. It doesn't just include words. It includes facts about candy corn that your students will enjoy reading. I call it a 'fact find'. Within each fact, a word (or words) is underlined. Those are the words the students will find in the puzzle. For example, one sentences says, "One ingredient in candy corn is marshmallow creme." The word 'marshmallow' is underlined and that is the word they will find.
In this candy corn themed word search puzzle, words are found forward, backward, up, down, and diagonal. I would consider it on the challenging side since students are looking for words diagonally and backwards, and because they will practice reading skills.
There are many options for using this word search 'fact find'.
One option is to have students partner up and practice fluency. They can take turns reading the sentences. This can be used for a writing activity. Have them take the facts from the puzzle and turn them into a paragraph, changing out some of the words to make it their own. Use it as a reading homework assignment, too. Parents can work with their child to find the words. Feel free to be creative and use it in your classroom however you would like.
The words underlined in the candy corn themed fact find include:
Jelly Belly (the company that has made candy corn the longest)
molds (used to form the shape)
chicken feed (the original name)
National (National Candy Corn Day is Oct. 30)
billion (numbers sold in billions)
healthier (fat free so considered healthier)
Dentists (don't like due to it having sticky sugar)
Google (most searched candy on Google)
Halloween (% sold on Halloween)
