***Updated February 2016!***
Now includes simple Student Directions for each activity, and more parent volunteer reminder sheets to help get you organized! One new fun station with an easy math game your students will LOVE has been added! Fonts and clipart have also been updated! I’ve also included a link for you to download a version of this pack without the 2nd grade Common Core standards labeled on the pages.
Everything you need to setup seven engaging, hands-on candy heart centers is included in this unit! Just add conversation hearts! This set includes SEVEN (six math, one language arts) candy heart themed stations that students can participate in during the month of February (or anytime you’d like!). None of the activities reference Valentine’s Day- only candy hearts! Each activity is aligned to 2nd grade Common Core math standards, although they can be used with any grade level! They can be done during one day with a stations model where students visit different stations in small groups, or over a longer span of time with the whole class. Either way, your students (or kids!) are sure to have such a blast with these hands-on conversation heart activities that they won’t even know they’re learning!
Activities included are:
Candy Heart Measurement
Students use both candy hearts and a standard ruler to measure different object cards.
Graphing with Hearts
Students collect data on their box of candy hearts and record and graph their findings.
Candy Heart Estimation Station
Students estimate how many candy hearts are in a jar, and then group the candies by 10s to find the actual amount. They compare their estimate to the actual amount and find the difference.
Exploring the Human Heart
Students look at a diagram of a human heart, and use labels to label their own human heart on their recording sheet. I’ve also included a few other fun, optional activities! If you have access to a stethoscope, students can count their heartbeat and their classmate’s heartbeats and record their findings. If you have access to devices, I’ve included my favorite “human heart” apps where students can virtually explore the human heart!
Make 20 AND Make 100
Students play a memory type game where their goal is to flip two cards that make 20 (or 100, depending on the version you decide to use- both versions and recording sheets are included!).
Steal My Heart Math Game
Students use their math talk and strategic thinking to play this game. The person to take the last heart is the loser! *Warning- this game is addicting! Even for adults!*
Mail Delivery Station
Good old fashion Valentine fun! Students pass out their goodies and treats to their classmates.
Included in this unit are:
*Table signs for each station/activity (8 stations total, including mail delivery!) ***One NEW station has been added!***
*Recording sheets for each activity in color and black & white (you choose!)
*Teacher directions & a list of materials for each activity
*Student directions for each activity ***NEW***
*A link to download the pack without Common Core centers labeled on the pages ***NEW***
*Volunteer request forms
*Reminder for volunteers form ***NEW***
*List of Common Core standards covered
You’ll just need to get out the conversation hearts and your students are sure to have an amazing time while participating in these Valentine activities while doing lots of learning they’ll love!
