Need a fun science experiment for your classroom? My kids loved doing this in class (you can see what they wrote about it within the packet). This is a great experiment using candy hearts. It compared the rate that they dissolve in water, vinegar and 7 up.
I designed this packet to incorporate science into my classroom. I wanted to make a week long unit that I could use in the afternoons of my day. The thought with this process (and is also described in the teacher notes portion of the packet) was the following:
~ On Monday, we would first fill out the page that outlines the
scientific method. We would then do the experiment and would
record our finding on the recording sheet(s). There are two
different recording sheets depending on your time frame.
On Monday, I used the longer experiment page- it took be about
an hour and a half to complete.
~ On Tuesday, my kids wrote a narrative about what they did in the
~ On Wednesday the kids write an informative/expository page
about the candy hearts.
~ On Thursday, the kids wrote an opinion piece telling me if they
liked the experiment or not. (I have included some of the pages
that my kids wrote in the pictures at the end of the packet. My
kids overall LOVED the experiment. I had two students say that
they did not (twins) and their reasoning was because I had them
write too much. From this feedback, I revised the first experiment
page. I used the second experiment page. When I do the
experiment again, I will have them write less).
The next part of the packet includes vocabulary slips to cut out and place on your board or in your pocket chart. These were words that we used in my classroom. It also includes a blank page to add your own words if you have more that I did not include.
The last page are photos of us doing this experiment
in our classroom. Like I said, my kids loved this experiment. They did an amazing job with their writing. I especially loved their opinion pieces and getting the feedback about their feelings during the week.
This packet includes a black and white copy of each page and a color copy of each page.
