I introduce these mats during small group instruction. I also use it in a whole group setting. Instead of using the lollipops, I have the students draw the number in tally marks on laminated mats and then I have them write the word below that. They use my number wall for the spelling. This is teaching them to work together as pairs, and it also teaching them to be a little more in charge of their learning. The next day I pull them from the wall and have them come over to explain what their number was and how many tally marks they wrote on their mat. This only takes a couple of minutes out of instruction. Then for the next couple of weeks I put it as one of our Math centers. The students then get to choose if they would rather use an expo marker to write the tally marks, or they can use the picture instead. It might take longer to go through their activity the first time they attempt it, but after the 3rd time doing it, they get the hang of it right away. My students love it! I hope yours do too!.
