Candy math is perfect as we are preparing for Halloween, or for use the week after Halloween. I am having each student bring in just 10 pieces of candy for participation in this activity.
These activities give students the opportunity to sort their candy between chocolate and non-chocolate. After they sort the candy they will graph their results, and then predict what they believe the class will have the most of.
In case you cannot bring candy to school there is also an activity where students can get up, move around the room, and ask each other what their favorite kind of candy is. Then students will tally their results, count the total, and then graph the top three.
Included you will find a blank recording sheet in case I have not created one perfect for your class. I have included a recording sheet for 20, 25, and 30 students.
Which candy weighs the most is perfect for students to compare the weight of different candy. They will be able to predict which candy is the heaviest, and then try to think about why that is.
Students are going to create a pictograph of the top ten types of candy that were collected in class, including a scale and key.
There is a connections sheet where students will answer questions about what they enjoy about candy, and which activities they enjoyed doing from this pack.
You will now find a recording sheet for each grade, 1 - 5, for favorite candy, and the class recording sheet for how much candy the ENTIRE class collected.
Students will predict which type of candy they think will dissolve the fastest, and then they will experiment to test their thoughts.
Students will work in groups to use 12 pieces of candy to build the tallest structure they can using only candy and toothpicks. A recording sheet is also provided for this exercise.
These activités will be perfect for when our students are engaged in Halloween, candy and all things spooky. It will be perfect to keep them engaged and learning!
