One of the greatest Christmas read aloud books I’ve had the pleasure of sharing with my first graders is “Can’t Wait Till Christmas!” by Mike Huckabee. Little listeners say “Oh, no!” and “Don’t do it!” and audibly gasp as young Mike and his sister, Pat, open their especially wished-for gifts early (while their parents are at work), play with them, and then re-wrap them. Then Christmas day comes and they have to fake being surprised. Oh no! Main idea: waiting is worth it! What a great way to teach an important lesson along with the Common Core State Standards for Reading Literature 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, and 9. And we do all the work, so you can just relax, share this true story, and use our text-dependent question card to teach close reading and to stimulate conversation. Also included in this packet is a “wish” page so students can write about what they wish for most for Christmas. Merry Christmas from Max Learner Book Detective!
