This bundle contains multiple resources for teaching your students about when and where to capitalize words in sentences. Your students will be introduced to many important capitalization rules.
I recommend starting with the PowerPoint, because it introduces students to the capitalization rules in a logical and systematic way. In the PowerPoint, I begin with the four "BIG" rules of capitalization:
1. Start every sentence
with a capital letter.
2. The pronoun I
is always capitalized.
3. Use capital letters for important words in titles
4. Use capital letters for proper nouns
From there, students are given an opportunity to differentiate common and proper nouns, and specific proper nouns are discussed, including:
-historical events and time periods
Next, some of the trickier aspects of capitalization are addressed, such as:
-capitalize directions when referring to regions (ex. Northeast),
but not when giving directions to general locations
-capitalize job titles when they appear directly in front of a name (ex. General Miller),
but not when the job title is separated from the name
-capitalize relationships when they precede or replace a proper noun (ex. I hope Grandma makes cookies for me),
but not when it is used as a common noun (Her grandma makes good cookies.)
This bundle includes:
1. a 46-slide PowerPoint
2. a 4-page matching PowerPoint companion handout
3. 28 task cards
4. a capitalization craftivity
5. 5 practice worksheets
6. a game with 45 sentence cards
7. an assessment
All of the resources directly support the rules introduced in the PowerPoint.
