Capitalizing Rules, Capitalize First Letters of Sentences, Capitalize Names, Capitalize Proper Nouns, Capitalize Titles, Capitalize I, Capitalize Dates, Capitalize Sentences, Common Core, PowerPoint, Posters, Worksheet.

This lesson was designed as both review and new learning for third, fourth and fifth grade writers. It addresses 1st through 4th grade common core standards that are specific to capitalization. This lesson uses five main rules of capitalization that are introduced on colorful slides and displayed on the printable posters. The presentation is in the form of a 20-slide PowerPoint show with playful animations and accompanying worksheets for guided and independent practice. Two posters with rules for capitalization are also included. The posters are 21.5 inches by 16.5 inches. Each of the posters are designed to be printed on four pages and then cut and pasted together. This forms a larger poster that children can see from across the room. Last of all, this lesson includes a suggested lesson plan with explanations for each slide, cues for when to use the worksheets, and answers to the questions on the worksheets.

We decided on making “Washington, D.C.” our theme due to the multiple meanings of the word “capital” and a chance to use the names of historic and famous people, places, things and events that are included in many Social Studies curriculums. We hope you and your students enjoy this lesson.
