Using photography and a 'selfie' this modern project is cross curricular and students love it! It can be used as a visual arts evaluation tool or social studies. You can edit the rubric to suit your needs.
Students take their self portrait and creatively capture their spirit using visuals and drawings. I usually pair this assignment when I teach students about primitive art and the importance of capturing animal spirits in caves. We discuss our own personal animal spirits and the connection between west coast art and the type of animal we consider ourselves most closely related to. Students love looking up information on animal spirits.
Selfie images can be printed in black and white and are to be incorporated into the project or you can simply photocopy the selfies onto an overhead and have students draw on the overhead and underneath it to create a mixed media work of art.
