This FREE number sense resource provides an inviting caramel candy apple themed clip card mental math center for your little learners to practice numerals and quantities to 20. This activity works well with fall/autumn, harvest, apple, farm, and Johnny Appleseed themes. It may be used as a follow-up math activity for a farm or apple orchard field trip or a fall/harvest festival. These cards are great for morning tubs, fast finishers, informal assessment, and take-home practice.

PLEASE NOTE:
This activity is suitable for classrooms that DO NOT celebrate Halloween.

Print, laminate, and cut out the clip cards. You will need to supply 20 clothespins for this activity.

There are pictures of caramel apples and a choice of three numerals printed on each card. Learners clip a clothespin on the correct numeral for the quantity of apples on the card or they can use dry erase markers to circle the correct numeral. You may opt to make these cards self-checking by writing the answer on the back or marking a dot on the back at the correct spot. Put the cards and clips in a zippered binder pouch for early finisher activities or take-home practice. You may also put the cards in a dollar store photo album and use a dry erase marker to make a write-on/wipe-off activity. Seasonal mini erasers, buttons, or pom-poms manipulated with tweezers/tongs may also be used to indicate answer choices.

This math center helps learners develop numeracy and supports the Math Common Core Standards for Counting and Cardinality. This activity is a great way to address subitizing.

Thank you for looking at this resource. I hope you and your learners enjoy this activity.

Have a Fantastic Fall!

The numbers from 11 to 19 are composed of a ten and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine ones.
Compose and decompose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some further ones, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each composition or decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 18 = 10 + 8); understand that these numbers are composed of ten ones and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine ones.
Count to answer “how many?” questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration; given a number from 1-20, count out that many objects.
Understand that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted. The number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they were counted.
When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object.
