This lab gives students the ability to see and taste several carbohydrate isomers including glucose, fructose, and starch. This is a pretty quick lab that can be used to introduce or review the key chemicals essential for life. I use this lab after discussing carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids (the "chemicals of life"). Students will be able to experience first hand how different isomers can really be. Plus, they get to eat sugar!
