This close reading and lab demonstration works great with your volcanoes or carbon cycle units!

Lake Nyos is a volcanic lake in Cameroon, Africa. An inactive volcano below the lake was slowly releasing carbon dioxide into the lake. As the lake overturned and and carbon dioxide was released, thousands of people and livestock in the surrounding areas suffocated and died overnight.

Included in this purchase:

- 2 page close reading article titled "Killer Carbon" with follow up questions. Two versions are included- lexile 1100 and lexile 780 for lower level readers.

- Lab demonstration that shows what happened at Lake Nyos. Materials needed: clear Tupperware container, candles, matches, baking soda, vinegar, and milk jug or 2 liter bottle. Following the demonstration students will answer questions about what happened and relate it to the disaster that occurred at Lake Nyos.
