This cardinal and intermediate directions exploration station is inspired by the open concept Montessori classroom model, in which activities are stored on open shelves within student reach to foster independent learning. However, this exploration station also works in a classroom that utilizes independent or small group learning or enrichment centers.
The goal of these stations is for students to revisit the topic several times. The station will change slightly and advance in material and difficulty when the teacher feels students are ready to move on.
Activity 1: Students can recognize and label the cardinal directions on a compass.
Activity 2: Students can recognize and label the intermediate directions on a compass.
Activity 3: Students investigate using a real compass, and can identify and label both the cardinal and intermediate directions.
Activity 4: Students practice their knowledge of cardinal and intermediate directions and can orient objects in relation to one another using the directions in a fun grid game.
