Product Description
To count objects and determine their quantity, and to understand that numerals can be represented by words are essential building blocks for a strong math foundation. Equally important is the ability to order numbers, to compare numbers, and to manipulate numbers.

We use many methods to teach students each of these concepts. Why not give students the opportunity to practice each of these fundamental skills in tandem? This engaging math center game gives your preschool and kindergarteners a way to practice all of these essential math skills in a fun, hands-on manner that they will really enjoy!

Card Games!
We have used the acorn and leaf cards for “Go Fish” and “I have…who has” We have even used it to play the card game “War”, which has helped us compare numbers!

Math Center
We typically use this as a small-group math center activity. Sometimes the students like to take turns drawing from card piles (1 leaf deck, 1 acorn deck) and matching their draws to corresponding squirrel mats. In smaller groups (or in partners) students will work together to jumble up the cards and “race” to give each squirrel his leaves and acorns as fast as they can.

Differentiation
I’ve used this as a supplemental aid for lower-preforming students who need extra help ordering numbers and counting sets. I will ask them to take the ‘squirrel mats’ and order them from 1-10and to do the same thing with the acorn words and then the leaf cards, in order to practice working with 'math words' and quantities. We have also used the cards as manipulates to help us distinguish between even and odd numbers.
