This is an activity that can be used at the end of a unit to have the students showcase their learning via a conversation/presentation-type project. The first 4 activities are set up to be the prep for the presentation. As a summative assessment, you could have the students either do a write up about the 3 events that they choose, do a visual presentation where they explain them, or a video presentation where they discuss the information along with their rationales/justifications for their choices. Another way that you could make this a collaborative effort is for the students who choose the same events (maybe not all the same events), they could be paired up to share the reason(s) why they believe that event is one that defined the period the most, or why a certain theme is one that needs to be understood about the time period.
The highlighted portions throughout the activity are the areas that the teacher would need to change unit by unit so that students know what they are expected to have in the charts and boxes provided.
There are a lot of ways that the last "specifics" activity could be crafted and used as a summative assessment tool. The whole packet could separately as pieces to guide the course of the student's learning throughout a unit, too.
I hope this tool is useful and helpful! Please feel free to comment after experimenting with it so that it can be improved! Enjoy, and happy teaching!
