Product Description
This resource utilizes the Common Core Standards for Career Readiness for third grade. This resource is divided into nine themes, or sections, grouped by similar standards. There are three lesson plans for each theme, for a total of 27 lesson plans. The lesson plans are designed to be spread out over the course of the school year, but the plans can certainly be condensed into shorter time periods!

Each lesson plan outlines an essential question for the lesson, the standards addressed in the lesson, a list of required materials (all materials are provided in this resource except various art supplies!), and a step-by-step guide of teaching procedures.

September: Personal Responsibility
1 – What are my responsibilities? Students will evaluate their responsibilities at home, at school, and in their communities.
2 – Who am I? Students will determine their roles at home, school, and in their communities.
3 – How do I use time wisely? Students will keep track of how they spend their time, then evaluate their findings

October: Teamwork
1 – Why is kindness important? Students will explore kindness and create compliments for their classmates.
2 – How can I work as a team? Students will be challenged to work as a team to reach a common goal.
3 – How is do different industries use teamwork to achieve a goal? Students will perform a Readers’ Theater play that details how teamwork is used in industry.

November: Money Management
1 – What would I do if I had all the money in the world? Students will describe what they would do if they had a million dollars.
2 – How do people make money? Students will conduct research to determine the earning potential of careers that interest them.
3 – How much money will I need? Students will play a game that simulates an adult’s budget, using monthly incomes, bills, and surprise expenses.

December: Interest Inventories
1 – What is most important to me? Students will evaluate their priorities and future goals.
2 – What types of careers interest me? Students will complete interest inventories to determine a career that matches their interests.
3 – How do our personalities & passions fuel our careers? Students will read biographies of people that have been successful in their careers and determine what contributed to their success.

January: Community Connections
1 – What types of jobs are available in my community? Students will identify jobs that are available in their local community.
2 – What is a typical day in the workplace? How do I prepare for a career? Students will interview someone in their chosen career field.
3 – What have I learned about my career of choice? Students will construct a diorama that represents their career of interest.

February: Career Prep
1 – How much education is required to prepare for a career? Students will sort careers by their required levels of education.
2 – How can I prepare for my future? Students will brainstorm things they can do in elementary, middle, and high school to prepare for their futures.
3 – What skills am I learning today that will be important to my future? Students will describe how the academic subjects they are learning today will be utilized in their future careers.

March: The Job Search
1 – How do I fill out a job application? Students will fill out sample job applications.
2 – How do I write a resume? Students will create sample resumes to reflect their education, skills, and talents.
3 – How do I write a letter? Students will write a letter of intent.

April: Success in the Workplace
1 – Why is communication important in the workplace? Students will practice clear expressive and receptive communication skills.
2 – Why is teamwork important in the workplace? Students will work as a team to achieve a common goal.
3 – Why is responsibility important in the workplace? Students will determine their current level of responsibility, then brainstorm ways they can be more responsible.

May: Entrepreneurship
1 – What is an entrepreneur? Students will read biographies of successful entrepreneurs, and determine what character traits contributed to their success.
2 – How do small businesses make money? Students will analyze the expenses of a make-believe lemonade stand to determine how businesses spend money and earn profits.
3 – How do small businesses deliver products and services? Students will work together to open their own small business in the classroom.
