How many times have you worked with a student who spoke their speech sound correctly and clearly as long as they were in your small group room? Yet, the ‘magic’ went away the instant they left your room? How often have you been ready to dismiss a student, only to learn from the parent that “we don’t hear correct speech sounds at home”? Several years ago I decided to find a way that would include the parents and classroom teachers in the generalization [carryover] process. I wanted to have paper documentation from parents and teachers supporting decisions for dismissal in therapy. From this determination the “Speech Coupon” was born.
Parents and Teachers are asked to listen to their children for short periods of time and document the quality of speech over a period of days on the speech coupon. The child then receives a prize, which is determined on a student by student basis that is motivating to that particular student. The exercise of receiving the attention and feedback of parents and teachers makes the child aware that using correct speech IS important to everyone in other areas of their life. It creates the necessary awareness for carryover to occur.
