"Casablanca" is a 1943 romantic drama film starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. The setting is WWII and it focuses on a man and woman torn between love and a greater duty to honor and country. The film won many awards, including Best Picture, and is ranked near the top of lists of the greatest films of all times. It boasts many famous lines your students should recognize. The film unfolds in Casablanca in 1941, with a lot of the action at 'Rick's Cafe' Americain' which attracts a varied French, Italian and German clientele plus refugees trying to obtain papers to get to the United States. The film is full of 'deals behind closed doors,' and a corrupt official who has an 'in' with the police captain. Ilsa, Rick's former lover in Paris shows up at his cafe. It is later revealed she did not realize her husband (Laszlo, fugitive Czech Resistance leader) was still alive when they first met in Paris. She is now trying to keep him alive and get him safely to Lisbon, but is torn by wanting to remain with Rick in Casablanca. And this is where we get more famous, frequently quoted lines about painful but 'right' choices. You will have to give your students a bit of a history lesson to accompany this film so they understand the danger of the decisions the characters are making. It is so fun to have students make casting decisions to remake "Casablanca" for today's audience.
