Poetry is one of my favorite units to teach! I love to engage students with videos to make the poetry come alive for them. One of my all-time favorite poems is “Casey at the Bat” by Ernest Lawrence Thayer. I have used this poem and video to teach various elements of poetry and figurative language for several years with various grade levels. The students always enjoy the lesson and learn a lot about poetry in the process!
In this file I have included the poem “Casey at the Bat”, several practice pages you can utilize in your classroom as a whole group, individually, in centers, or even as homework, a link to a youtube video of Casey at the Bat you can watch with your class or have students view independently, a 5 day lesson plan outline, a poem writing brainstorming page, a rough draft outline, and a final copy outline. The practice pages include vocabulary, close reading, and figurative language activities. I’ve aligned each activity around Common Core ELA standards, including Reading Literature, Reading Foundational Skills, Writing, and Language standards.
