Casey’s Revenge Power Point and Activity Packer
This is a bundle of lessons and instructional resources related to Casey’s Revenge, the sequel to Ernest Lawrence Thayer’s iconic poem, Casey at the Bat. Casey struck out in 1888 to the wonderment of all. After that, everyone just had to live with it, including Casey. Then in 1912, Grantland Rice decided that Casey deserved another chance and wrote this exciting sequel. This bundle contains.
1) A Casey's Revenge Power Point Presentation
This is an entertaining and colorful power point presentation with accompanying worksheets. It’s engaging, interactive, and has attractive clipart and graphic images.
The power point facilitates an interactive cloze sentence and discussion activity where students try to reconstruct the rhyme scheme and analyze the poem. The poem is presented by stanza, with two words omitted from each which complete the end rhyme scheme of couplets. Students provide the missing information in context. I have used this activity for ten years and my students love it. I have enhanced the imagery of the PPT and this should also enhance student enthusiasm and focus.
2) A comprehensive step by step lesson plan which is aligned to US Common Core Standards.
3) An audio recording of the poem, Casey's Revenge. This allows the teacher to stop the recording at appropriate places to clarify and discuss the action. This is freely available on line and I am including it here only as a convenience.
4) Casey’s Revenge worksheet which includes,
a) Evidence-based discussion questions with answer sheet included This is an evidence-based activity where students answer questions by scanning the poem and using evidence (couplets and stanzas) from the poem to support their conclusions
b) Vocabulary activities-This is a cloze exercise word attack activity where students scan the poem to find 20 vocabulary words. The vocabulary activities contain hints as to which stanza the vocabulary words appear in. Hints can be removed from vocabulary exercises and the text of the poem can be attacked as a whole to make it more challenging. Answer sheet is included.
I think you will enjoy this poem and these activities. I also have 2 power points and activity sheets for the two most popular versions of Casey at the Bat. There is also a bundle for both poems.
