This is a complete Catcher in the Rye compare and contrast writing assignment. Here, students will be writing an essay that compares and contrasts Salinger's novel with a modern-day bildungsroman, The Perks of Being a Wallflower. With this assignment, you can show the Perks film, if permissible, or, you can use the Stephen Chbosky's novel. The assignment includes the guidelines for writing (including suggestions for the different topic selections), a graphic organizer for use during watching or reading of Perks, and a worksheet that has students work through their two outside sources. This is to encourage vetting of the articles and also allows the students to practice paraphrasing. The mini-writing unit can be completed inside or outside of class and works best for honors-level or gifted and talented students.
