Prezi is a great alternative to Powerpoint presentations in your classroom. These presentations feature fluid animation that captures your students' attention. Overall, I have found these presentations to be far more effective than a standard presentation in my classes.

This particular presentation details themes, motifs, and symbols within J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye. Depending on how long you spend on each slide, this presentation accounts for 20-40 minutes of instructional time, and it is a great overview for literary elements within the text. I use this in the last third of the novel, but it could also be used as a wrap-up activity.
It also begins with a GREAT attention grabber at the start of the lesson. I used a video copy of Green Day's song, "Basket Case." The video is embedded directly into the presentation, and it contains lyrics for the song. Your students will find many interesting connections between the song and the text. In my class, it has lead to many interesting discussions.
Symbols Covered within the text:
• Holden’s Red Hunting Cap
• The Ducks in Central Park
• The Museum of Natural History
• “The Catcher in the Rye”
Please Note: The video contains a zip file with all that you need to play the presentation. Though you can access Prezi's software online for free, there is no need to download any software. Simply unpack the file on your computer, and click on the Prezi application to play the file.
