Word categories games are a great way to build vocabulary, word choice, and critical thinking skills in our upper elementary, middle school, and high school students.
Vocategories, my line of vocabulary word games with categories, is meant to bring up student engagement and fun while working on these important English skills.
Encouraging students to find words that start with a certain letter that also fit into certain word categories challenges them to think critically about the English vocabulary they know and it also helps them learn and associate new words as they compare answers with peers. These categories games for kids are great for centers, early finishers, ELA warm-ups, and more!
I personally have used these vocabulary games with my ESL students as a warm-up or center to expand their English vocabulary. You may allow them to use a dictionary or website to scaffold them, based on their understanding of English.
This word category game is played like the popular game, Scattergories. A letter dice is rolled to decide which letter all of the words and phrases must start with. Each student receives the same list of word categories. The timer is set for a specific time, and students have to work to try to write down a word or phrase that fits into the specific word categories on their list. When time is up, students compare lists to score points. All the details are inside the resources!
There are four lists in each of my Vocategories resources. There is one character education list in each, as well as two that go with the theme of the month or season, and one that can be used year-round. This bundle has sets of categories games for each month of the year, so you can rotate the
You may also use the categories games lists as word categories worksheets; however, I find that friendly competition keeps students engaged longer! I hope your students enjoy playing Vocategories with these vocabulary games!
