This activity is great as a pre-assessment, a formative assessment, or a summative assessment on shape attributes.
36 plane shapes to sort!
How I use this resource:
Place students in pairs or small groups of three. First, have students cut out each page of plane shapes. Then, give each group a large piece of construction paper and glue. Ask students to work together to create categories of plane shapes based on common attributes. Require students to create at least three different categories that will fit all shapes in, or more categories to provide students with a bit more of a challenge or room to work.
Once students have created categories, they should write a category title on a section of the construction paper and then paste each shape that shares that attribute under the corresponding category. Students should paste all of the plane shapes on the construction paper under a category. Some attributes for category ideas are opposite parallel sides, shapes with right angles, or even quadrilaterals!
