Having the ability to be able to sort items into categories is a basic skill that students greatly benefit from. Recognizing groups of objects requires logical thinking, an ability that will be important as your students make other decisions throughout their day/lives.
While a student is learning to categorize they will have the opportunity to build language skills. As I am sure we all know this is very important in our special education or early childhood classrooms.
Also, understanding the relationship between the different groups/categories and being able to discuss the relationships hones analytical skills.
