Category Sticks have been a staple Grab and Go resource within my therapy room for 10 years now. I revised them to expand the vocabulary/stimulus words, update visual cues and add data sheets. These Language Sticks stand the test of time in my therapy room and are a wonderful addition to any literacy/RTI center within the classroom setting. The words are supplemented with images, adding additional visual support which facilitates increased independence among early readers or English Language Learners. Are your students often described as hands-on or multisensory learners?
Mine are too. I love that interactive Language Sticks can be incorporated into a mixed group activity or used on their own. Students are able to interact with the Language Sticks, adorning them with clothespins, playdough, beans, small rocks, etc. It helps bring controlled choices into your therapy room as students can choose their sticks/manipulatives/reinforcer yet you provide the foundational materials that target their goals (i.e., category sticks). It is a win-win.
Do you feel like you spend the majority of your time taking data and less time really instructing students on the targeted skill?
I did. We live in a data driven world. I needed to find a balance between obtaining the data needed to support my students’ goals and instructing them how to improve the actual skill. I felt most of my time was spent assessing what they did not know with minimal instruction to teach those skills. Language Sticks allow me to instruct my students on categorization in a systematic manner with a direct correlation to application of learned skills.
