Presenting Category UNO - a great activity for reinforcing and categorizing vocabulary words.
This activity features 108 total playing cards with 4 categories of items targeting:
Science (20 cards)
Math (20 cards)
Geography (20 cards)
Language Arts (20 cards)
And… one skip, reverse, draw 2 card in each color, as well as 4 wild cards and 4 wild +4 cards
Also included: 2 blank playing cards per color for additional targets
I typically begin by using this activity to collect informal baseline data about the terms that the student already knows, and for those which he/she requires additional instruction and practice. Next, I require the student to sort into the 4 targeted categories. I then use the cards to teach the vocabulary words, requiring my student(s) to use the words in a sentence, define the word etc.
Then it's time to play!!
Students play Category UNO Level 2 much like the Classic game of UNO.
The deck is first shuffled and each player is given 7 cards. The remaining cards are placed in the center of the table with one card turned up. Students can play cards based on matching color or can play a card based on a matching category (for example, the word ‘numerator’ can be placed on ‘circumference’ as they both fall into the math category). Students pick up a card from center pile when they have no moves left. The first player to discard all cards wins!
