Presenting Category UNO - a great activity for helping your students to learn to sort items into categories. This download features 100 total playing cards, targeting 4 categories of items including clothing, fruits, vegetables and animals. The download also includes "4 category mats."
I typically start with the having students sort cards into 4 piles using the category mats. Once this skill is mastered, I use the category UNO game to increase difficulty level, and to continue practice with this skill. The kids love it because they are playing a game - I love it because they are continuing to practice their categorizing skills!
Students play Category UNO much like the Classic game of UNO.
The deck is first shuffled and each player is given 7 cards. The remaining cards are placed in the center of the table with one card turned up. Students can play cards based on matching color or can play a card based on a matching category (for example, a red sock can be placed on a blue t-shirt as they both fall into the clothing category). Students pick up a card from center pile when they have no moves left. The first player to discard all cards wins!
Too difficult? Skip the UNO rules! Use the 4 category mats and ask students to sort playing cards into piles
