CATERPILLAR HAPPY ... NEW EDITION!
Caterpillar Happy is an innovation of the poem, Jack-O Happy. Each month, I introduce a different innovation of this 6 line poem. Caterpillar Happy is introduced during our unit on Spring, Eggs, and Bugs! The Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle, is also read at this time.
By Spring, my students have internalized the traditional 6-line poem of Jack-O-Happy and realize that the last sentence is always a surprise. They remember that Snowball Happy was best as a snowman, Valentine Happy was best on a card, and Shamrock Happy will be worn best on a hat! With every new poem, I pause after reading the first five sentences and allow them to brainstorm ideas before telling them the ending. However, Caterpillar Happy is the first poem where sentence five also changes. The kids are surprised when they learn that Caterpillar Happy is in his cocoon, not in pieces small, as the original poem stated.
My students question why Caterpillar is in a cocoon and not a chrysalis. We discuss this error and wonder why the author did not use the correct term. There is always one child who realizes that cocoon and soon …. RHYME! Mystery solved!
