Within each type of pattern you will find 3 boards with caterpillars that are completely colored in and three boards with caterpillars that have some blank sections. Younger children will enjoy using the full color boards for color matching while older children can use the boards with blank sections to practice identifying and continuing the patterns. Blank boards were added so that kids can make their own patterns.
Pom-poms, buttons, magnetic counting discs, or other manipulatives can be used to cover the patterned segments on the caterpillar bodies. If you do not have pom-poms or other items in the correct colors to use to cover the caterpillar sections, I have also included a page of color discs that can be used with the activity. The pattern board activity is fun to use on a magnetic board or cookie sheet. Simply apply magnets to pom-poms with a hot glue gun

Caterpillar Counting Clip Cards:
This resource was recently updated and includes the following:
- 7 clip cards with numbers and dot patterns
- 15 clip cards with numbers
- 2 clip card covers
- printable caterpillars
You will need a clothespin clip to complete the activity.
There are more than one opportunity for couninting on the cards., so it's easy to challenge advanced students. The cards can be used to compare to the classic children's story as well as to practice numerous early math concepts. Using a clothespin is also a great activity to help build fine motor skills.
Object Counting: Count the objects on a card and attach the caterpillar clip to the correct numeral or dot pattern on the bottom of each card. Challenge kids to find additional opportunities for counting the objects on the cards.
Numeral Recognition: Compare the cards. Find cards with the same numeral or dot patterns on the bottom. Make the caterpillar “eat” all of the 5’s, 3’s, etc.
Construct the Same: Ask your child to count the same number of objects as pictured on the card using coins, buttons, or other objects.
More/Less/Compare: Select two different cards and ask your child to tell you which one has the most, the least, the greater, or the fewer number of objects.
One More or One Less: After counting the objects on the card, ask children how many objects the caterpillar would eat if he ate one more or one less.
These cards are suitable for use in your preschool, pre-k, special education, early intervention, speech therapy or homeschool classroom. Use them in your math centers or take-home math bags.
Butterfly Matching Boards:
This butterfly matching activity is a great way to strengthen visual perception skills. The development of visual perception skills will help children with number, letter, and word recognition.
