Tired of always having to tell students to put their goggles back on? Have the kids monitor each other! I present this recipe to my students after I have told them for the first time that they must wear their goggles in the lab. The following rule in the lab is, if you see someone performing a lab (or even cleaning up) who is NOT wearing their goggles, they must inform me (I have to witness it) and then I yell, "Goggles!!!" The students clap and are excited, because then that person is told that they must bring in a batch of cookies for the entire class within one week. All students get fair warning of this rule. Likewise, this rule also applies to me - if students catch me in the lab area or performing a demo WITHOUT my goggles on, they can call me out on it too and I owe them a batch. I show them this recipe so that they cannot claim they do not know a good cookie recipe. It's fun to go over the scientific names of day to day material with them as well. Nagging the students to wear their goggles are no longer anything I worry about anymore!
