Cause and Effect
: Are you working on using or identifying cause and effect signal words in your classroom? If so, your students will enjoy this fun word search!! If your students are like mine, they love these.
In this cause and effect themed puzzle, words are found forward, backward, up, down, and diagonally. I would consider it on the challenging side since students are looking for words in all directions. In addition,a few of the terms are going to need further explanation, such as 'consequently' or 'on account of'. See the words below, as some of the terms students will find are phrases and not just single words.
The definitions of cause and effect are also included on the sheet.
There is a mouse themed picture with a glass of milk. It says,"If you give a mouse a cookie, he's going to ask for a glass of milk." This is a term from a book that most kids are quite familiar with, so you can use it to begin your discussion if you want.
I use word searches to introduce vocabulary, or even just give it as morning work to get kids thinking about the topic of the day. They are also great to use in writing. Perfect for a sub, too.
This can also be incorporated into a writing activity. You could have students complete their writing using some of the words from the word search puzzle, such as write several sentences showing cause effect relationships using the clue words, or maybe have them write a story where they have to include at least 3 from the list. They can then underline them in the story. If you choose to use the cause and effect word list that way, it will make a fun writing or literacy center.
Of course you don't have to do the writing part, you could simply use it for the puzzle.
