1. Cause and Effect - Scaffolded Activities to Build Understanding

This no prep cause and effect resource starts off with the basics and gets increasingly more difficult to help make teaching and differentiating easier for you - just print and go! These activities are great if you are just introducing cause and effect, or if your students need more practice or review.

This resource has been adapted and updated from my Cause and Effect Bundle so that teachers can just buy the scaffolded printables without the task cards or games. If you have already bought that resource, then you already have this!

Students will start by thinking about cause and effect relationships and learning to distinguish between cause and effect. Then, students will practice using several different cause and effect graphic organizers to help them better understand how cause and effect might look in different instances.

Students will also get a chance to practice cause and effect within writing before applying what they have learned within longer reading passages.

Included in this resource:

  • 5 cause and effect cut and paste activities to help your students learn the difference between cause and effect
  • 5 cause and effect graphic organizer activities
  • 1 activity that has students think about cause and effect relationships that don't make sense
  • 2 cause and effect writing activities where students read short, unfinished passages and have to finish the story by adding a reasonable effect
  • 2 half page cause and effect reading passages with a chart to fill in
  • 1 full page cause and effect passage with test prep questions
  • 4 blank, reusable cause and effect graphic organizer that can be used with other texts
  • 1 grading rubric and answer keys

This resource can be used for homework, literacy centers, review, practice, and more for 2nd grade, 3rd grade, and 4th grade students that need more cause and effect practice.

2. Cause and Effect - 3 Games and Centers

First Center: Cause and Effect Mazes

Students are given a cause or an effect. In order for them to complete the maze correctly, students must shade either possible causes for the provided effect, or possible effects for the provided cause.

Included: There are 3 mazes that have students shade in possible causes, and 3 mazes that have students shade in possible effects. There are also 2 different student recording sheets, for these activities, and an answer key.

Second Center: Cause and Effect Matching Game

This is a 2 player matching game. There are 12 cause cards and 12 corresponding effects cards. Students try to match up the cause with the correct effect while playing the matching game.

Included: 12 cause cards, 12 effect cards, student instructions, student recording sheet, and an answer key

If you have struggling students and are differentiating, starting them off with this cause and effect matching game instead of the other centers might prevent frustration.

Third Center: Cause and Effect Chain of Events

This can be an independent, partner, or small group activity. Students are given 24 cards with short texts on them. They must sort the cards into 3 groups, and then put each of the cards in those groups in order based on a logical cause and effect chain of events.

Included: 24 chain of event cards, student recording sheet, and answer key

The cause and effect workstations / centers are fairly low prep. The cause and effect just need to be printed and copied. The other two centers require a little cutting and optional laminating. This makes a cause and effect review for your 2nd and 3rd grade students.

3. Cause and Effect Task Cards

Use this low prep resource to help your students practice cause and effect within shorter texts in a fun way. Students will read This product contains 24 cause and effect task cards. Students must read a short paragraph, and then determine the cause or effect of an event.

Some of the cards ask students to determine the cause of a certain event mentioned in the short reading passage, while other cards ask the students to determine the effect of an event.

This resource contains 24 cause and effect task cards, a student recording sheet, an answer key, and a grading rubric. Check out the preview to see everything that is included.

These task cards are also good for modeling cause and effect to your 2nd or 3rd grade students.
